Howard Chaykin is one among the greatest creators to ever work in the comic media and shares the title of my favorite artist with Bill Sienkiewicz. I first discovered Howard when American Flagg came out when I was about 14. At the time I read comics for the stories and the characters and did not pay much attention to the art. I remember the characters in Flagg and how well the art and story intertwined. The sleeze and corruption as well as the heroism and valor erupted from the art as well as it did from the text. Howard's work on this series was so landmark for so many reasons. The use of panel design, television commentary, sounds, panel layouts, lighting and so many other elements still blows my mind when I see his work. I won't endeavour to list all his comic work but below are among my favorites. Heavy Metal Magazine, Epic Magazine, Conan, Starstruck, Cody Starbuck, Marvel Premeires, American Flagg, Black Kiss, Men of War, Shadow, Blackhawk, Fireman, Danger Man, Hulk Magazine, Scorpion, Amercian Century and many others.
